Our History

We have lovingly and respectfully reclaimed our past to set ourselves apart in the present. We invite you to learn about the history of an industrial reality that lies dormant and that once was a driving force of transformation in this region: The Iron Mines of A Silvarosa.

A journey through time that begins in the late 19th century with the company "THE VIVERO IRON ORE COMPANY SOCIETY C.O. L.T.D", which was managed by Germans, Basque industrialists, and eventually a national company, and concludes in the 1960s.

Viveiro

The capital of the Mariña Occidental region, this elegant coastal town with over 900 years of history, preserves an intriguing medieval legacy in its beautiful historic center, making it a must-visit if you're exploring northern Galicia.

We have compiled a list of what we believe are some of the places to see in Viveiro. Let's get started!

The best preserved and main gateway to access the ancient walled medieval town of Viveiro.
Constructed in honor of Charles I of Spain and V of Germany, this Plateresque-style gate is made of ashlar stone and adorned with the coats of arms of Galicia, Viveiro, the Emperor, four medallions, and the bust of Charles V. On its rear side, protected by a wooden niche, is the image of San Roque, one of the two patron saints of Viveiro.

It is a splendid viewpoint overlooking the Viveiro estuary where the old mineral loading dock of the A Silvarosa mines has been restored. Currently, remnants of the aerial tramway used to transport the mineral from the mountain to the sea and the hoppers where it was stored are also preserved in this area. The material was primarily used for armament purposes, with countries like England, Germany, and the Netherlands being recipients.

The Church of the Convent of San Francisco is a Catholic place of worship located in the town of Viveiro (province of Lugo, Galicia, Spain). It serves as the main church of the Santiago parish in San Francisco de Viveiro. Constructed in the 14th century, it features a single nave.

This church, along with its surroundings, is considered a Cultural Heritage Site listed in the catalog of historical monuments of Spain.

The Church of Santa María del Campo is a Catholic place of worship located in the city of Viveiro, in the province of Lugo (Galicia, Spain). Situated at the highest point of the historic quarter, next to the Monastery of La Concepción, it is the oldest church in the city.

This church is Romanesque in style and has been considered a Cultural Heritage Site since 1982, along with its surroundings, listed in the catalog of historical monuments of Spain.

To conclude this list of essential places to see in Viveiro, there's nothing better than taking the car and heading up to the Mirador de San Roque, where you'll have the best views of the city and the estuary flowing into the sea.
Located at 353 meters high, this mountain offers other attractions such as the Chapel of San Roque, some traditional granaries known as "hórreos," and a picnic area with several tables to enjoy while waiting for sunset.

The Cueva de la Doncella, also known as the Cueva de los Encantos, is a beautiful natural viewpoint easily accessible from Abrela Beach in the municipality of Viveiro.

When you arrive at the cave, you will encounter a tunnel of approximately 15 meters that you must pass through to enjoy a natural window with stunning views of the cliff between Punta del Caballo and Abrela Beach.

It's a highly recommended walk, but it's important to be cautious if you're with young children because there are no fences to protect against potential falls if you get too close to the edge.

In the northernmost part of the Montes do Buio, we find a peak that rises to 453.3 meters, known as Monte de San Roque, located within the municipality of Viveiro.

It's not just any mountain; it's a mythical and legendary place for all the inhabitants of the region. Moreover, the panoramic view from there is sure to leave you impressed.

There are several points of interest that you can explore if you climb Monte de San Roque, including a viewpoint, a hermitage, A Cova do Santo (Saint's Cave), and the entire recreational area that makes up this place.

Area Beach is located 4 km from the city of Viveiro, in the province of Lugo (Galicia, Spain). It stretches 1150 meters in length and varies in width between 40 and 90 meters, depending on the tides.

This beach enjoys excellent accessibility, with a wide parallel promenade and a variety of tourist services available such as first aid stations, hotels, restaurants, a disco-pub, and a youth hostel. It experiences high occupancy during the summer season and has clear, calm waters.

A beach of great natural beauty, nestled between cliffs, with its white, fine sands making it perfect for sunbathing and relaxation. It is not very crowded during the peak summer months. The beach is lined with a seaside promenade and can be accessed via boardwalks.

Their official name is Punta Socastro, but it's known as “O Fuciño do Porco”. This unique name, meaning "pig's snout" in English, refers to the cape where an impressive route is located. It winds along a wooden pedestrian walkway and offers a breathtaking stroll amidst cliffs overlooking the Cantabrian Sea.

At the entrance of the Viveiro estuary in O Vicedo stands this impressive viewpoint overlooking Pereira Beach and Area Grande. This route follows wooden boardwalks with some stairs, offering a spectacular landscape that spans from Xove to Bares, providing views that will leave you speechless. Walking on these boardwalks is a magical experience as you enjoy the area, and to top it off, you can see the sea from a privileged vantage point.
